Dude, order the hottest wings on the menu and shove those mofo’s down your gullet. YOLO!
Sweetie, buy that dress and rock the hell out of it. YOLO!
A time existed after Drake dropped his famous anagram that young kids and adults alike would recite YOLO on a daily basis resulting in either incredible laughter or annoying looks from strangers. YOLO entered its way into our lives and became one of the most overused phrases in history, confusing grandparents and inciting face palms for what seemed like forever.
What gets lost in the modernization of the YOLO phrase is actually the astounding impact that such a phrase can have on each of our lives. Think about it. YOLO, in its essence, is the transition from something old to something new. Boring to exciting. Stagnant to Adventurous. Avocado dip to Guacamole Lasagna.
YOLO needs to become our new motto to live by. The cliche is over! Life is far too short to spend every day doing the same tasks, eating the same food and going to the same places. Life is meant to be explored and experienced and that can’t be done by repeating the same steps day in and day out.
Get out there and live! Let’s try new things and explore who we really are. Always wanted to learn an instrument? Go for it! Try stand-up comedy? Bump dump tsh baby! Karate? Hwayh yah!
Seriously, do it. Why?
Because when we’re on our deathbed, we’re all going to wish we did the things we told ourselves we always wanted to do. No exceptions!
Someday, everyone one of us is going to wish we did all the things we said we would do when we were younger.
So we really need to start doing anything and everything! I know, in speaking personally, that I’ve spent far too many days lounging around in my house when I should have been out there living!
Doing different things.
Exploring different areas.
Trying out new foods!
The good news is that it’s never to late to start living every day like it’s out last, so let’s make a change for the better and YOLO this MOFO. Here are five way we can implement YOLO into our lives.
- Set a daily reminder
Few things are more powerful than daily reminders (like maybe Tom Seleck’s mustache game) and a daily reminder to ourselves that we only live once sets us up for new adventures and experiences. Why go to the same Dunkin Donuts and order the usual when we can check out the new coffee shop across town and try something different? Maybe meet someone new! A simple daily reminder can be the difference between boring and adventurous.
- Don’t Worry about what could wrong
Shouting out YOLO when you book that adventurous trip to India instead of the annual trip to Miami could quickly turn to fear and regret once all of the endless worrying thoughts start to flow. Sure, maybe that tan won’t come so easily or Godzilla will rise out of the Mediterranean Sea and devour the Middle East, but worrying about all of the different possibilities of what could go wrong will cloud all of the possibilities of what could go right. Embrace the change and be optimistic about the new decision, you’re going to love the mystery anyway.
3. Have fun with it
There have been many a drunken night where I’ve looked out on the horizon from that cold pint and said “To hell with it, I’m gonna do it!” Then my friends cheered and laughed and it was amazing! Until the next morning…when I woke up and what I did became a reality…and my friends no longer cheered…but still laughed. Hey, it happens and in the long run it made for a great story! So have fun with YOLO and do something crazy! (Just don’t kill anyone, or do? I’m not your mom!)
- Use it for everything, big or small
We don’t need to book big adventurous trips or spend thousands of that green as a prerequisite for shouting out YOLO. Even the small changes like rolling up on that hottie at the bar or taking a new class on pottery or dragon slaying can open up our world to endless possibilities that will not occur otherwise. What’s the worst that can happen anyway?
- Reward Yourself
Whether we YOLO the hell out of our lives or not, things may not always have great outcomes. Maybe that hottie at the bar turned out to be a totally psychotic and stole your credit card, bought a house in Beverly Hills and turned your best friend against you? Yuck, you done messed up! But before we book our ticket for the pity party, remember that we used YOLO to have new experiences and did something different instead of sticking with the norm. We need to smile and remind ourselves that we made a change in our lives and that alone is something to be happy about. Go out and get your favorite ice cream and treat yourself, you deserve it!
So remember, You Only Live Once, so you might as well do and try everything you want to! In the end, you’ll be glad you did.
