“I’ve never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful” – Unknown
What if I told you that we could make ourselves happy right at this very moment, regardless of our current situation? Would you believe me? Has something happened in the recent past, is something currently happening, or are you in some unfortunate situation that you read that opener and just think “No way, there’s no way I could be happy. The kids are screaming in my ear and the dog just pooped on the couch for the umpteenth time. No way. NO WAY!”
If we’ve just had the worst day ever because we lost our job, our car broke down or a dragon burnt down our favorite restaurant, there is one simple remedy that can make it all better: smiling. Smiling is the difference between being able to enjoy all the aspects of our life or having the feeling that life has it out for us. It’s gratitude wrapped in the muscles of our face. It’s joy brewed in a potion that we can drink any time.
In short, smiling is happiness.
There are always reasons to smile but sometimes we can forget just how powerful our smiles can be. So, let’s look at 3 reasons why we should always remember to smile.
- It literally makes us happy
The funny thing about smiling is our brain has associated it with all of the great moments in our life. From when we got our first birthday cake to when we first had sex, our brains recognized that “Damn, this moment is pretty great” and made us smile. Smiles are universal after all, as all cultures recognize the smile as a symbol for happiness. Even the blind smile, although they’ve never actually seen one.
So, whenever we’re having a crappy day, just crack that lovely smile. Our brains sees us smiling and automatically thinks that there is something to be happy about. It then releases the chemicals that make us experience pleasure, thus, making us feel less crappy. Why waste time in our life feeling unhappy when a smile can reverse the course of every day?
- It makes us more attractive
Just like the quote above, everyone looks beautiful when they are smiling. Why do you think all the people we see on TV or on social media are always smiling? No one wants to look at a picture of someone frowning or being unhappy; it’s depressing.
Smiling is the easiest way to open ourselves up to opportunities with people, like coworkers, everyday strangers, or even those potential lovers on our radar. No matter how rough a day is going, keeping the chin up and a genuine smile on our faces puts on a welcoming facade for those who pass by. I’m not saying keeping a smile is going to make that hot guy or gal come over and make love to us on the spot, but I can promise it won’t happen if we’re frowning like a basket hound.
- It makes others happy
I often have people tell me that, although they love their lives, they wish what they did could feel more meaningful. The truth is, not many of us work at jobs or do things outside of work that really help other people enrich their lives. Kudos to those who do.
No matter what we do, however, smiling is a fool proof way that we can spread happiness and joy to all those we come into contact with. Smiling really is contagious. We’re inclined to mimic the antics of people we come into contact with. So, naturally, we’re going to emulate a smile from someone else who is smiling, or vice versa.
So the next time we’re feeling like we’re not helping others, let those pearly whites shine and watch others suddenly start to smile. And they told me I couldn’t be a magician when I was a kid…
It’s a common feeling that life can be complex and stressful at times. Each day, we face an ever-changing list of obstacles and challenges that complicate our plans and threaten our overall happiness. No matter what kind of day we’re having, remember that our smile can brighten up the entire world. Share it openly; it is more powerful than we could imagine.
